Preparedness is about more than assembling an emergency kit—it is about building the knowledge, confidence, and relationships that help communities withstand and recover from disasters. That spirit of resilience was on full display during Ready Together: Ready for Resilience, where community members, local organizations, and preparedness professionals came together to learn, connect, and strengthen their ability to face future emergencies.
One of the greatest strengths of the event was the opportunity for community members to engage directly with local organizations and preparedness experts. Participants asked questions, shared personal experiences, and explored resources available throughout the region. These conversations reinforced an important message: resilience is built through collaboration, and no one should have to prepare for disasters alone.
One of the highlights of the event was an engaging panel discussion that explored what community resilience looks like in practice and how organizations can work together to better prepare for disasters. The panel featured Ms. Doris Brown of the Northeast Action Collective, Dr. Joy Semien of The K.A.P.S. Disaster Hub, and Erin Livingston of the Houston-Galveston Area Council. Together, the panelists shared their unique perspectives on community preparedness, regional collaboration, available resources, and the importance of empowering residents before disasters occur. Participants had the opportunity to ask questions, learn from each speaker’s expertise, and gain a deeper understanding of how partnerships across nonprofit organizations, regional agencies, and community leaders contribute to building stronger, more resilient communities.
